Study on the flame retardant properties of brucite powder in EPDM rubber

As an environmentally friendly flame retardant, brucite powder has received extensive attention in the rubber industry. This paper reviews the application of brucite powder in EPDM rubber, focusing on its effect on the flame retardant properties of rubber and its advantages over traditional flame retardants.

Introduction With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, the search for efficient and environmentally friendly flame retardants has become a research hotspot. Brucite powder has great application potential in rubber products with its unique flame retardant properties and environmental friendliness.

Brucite powder introduction Brucite powder is a natural mineral with Mg(OH)₂ as its main component, and has good flame retardant properties. Its addition can effectively improve the flame retardant properties of rubber products, while being environmentally friendly and not producing harmful substances.

Experimental method

Sample preparation: Mix different contents of brucite powder with EPDM rubber, mix them in an open mill and then vulcanize and form them.

Performance test: The effect of brucite powder on the performance of EPDM was evaluated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile performance test and other methods.

Results and discussion

Flame retardant performance: The experimental results show that with the increase of brucite powder content, the limiting oxygen index of EPDM gradually increases, indicating that its flame retardant performance is significantly improved.

Mechanical properties: Although the addition of brucite powder will affect the tensile strength and elongation at break of EPDM to a certain extent, it can still maintain good mechanical properties when added within a reasonable range.

Synergistic effect: The study also found that when brucite powder is used in conjunction with other flame retardants such as red phosphorus, the flame retardant properties of EPDM can be further improved.

As an environmentally friendly flame retardant, brucite powder not only improves the flame retardant properties of EPDM, but also has good mechanical properties. It has broad application prospects in the rubber industry, especially in rubber products that require flame retardant properties.
